Shining
Star provides a coordinated multi-agency approach and prompt response
to the investigation, intervention and treatment of sexual and physical
abuse of children residing in Lee and Ogle counties of Illinois.
By bringing together specially trained collaborative team members from
the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), law enforcement
agencies, prosecution offices, the judicial system, and medical/mental
health fields, the Shining Star program reduces the number of times
children are subjected to interviews — significantly minimizing
emotional trauma to children, and their families. Further, this team
approach facilitates victim recovery and can strengthen the chance for
successful criminal prosecution through improved investigations.
Upon visiting the Shining Star facility, one will immediately notice
the bright, cheerful and non-threatening environment. From the soothing
wall treatments, toys, stuffed animals and play areas, to the display
of artwork created by children served by Shining Star, virtually the
entire center has been designed and constructed to put children at
ease, making them feel safe and welcomed.
The services provided by Shining Star have been carefully structured
and put in place to deliver optimal results. These services involve
interviewing of the child, a forensic medical examination, and
counseling and recovery services. To learn more about each of these
services, visit their sub-link pages under “Our Approach &
Services”.
